In 1947 my Grandfather purchased ten acres of clear farmland in Northern Lake County, Illinois. When his boys came home from war and jobs were scarce, he decided to give his sons something to do. He used the farm to ease the stresses of everyday life and the painful memories of the war for him and his boys. Together they created a life positive environment, raised livestock, grew gardens and by working together created a peaceful place.
The Balen family veterans have moved on, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the ideal that first started with my Grandfather: you served your country and now it’s time for you to move on.
Freedom Farm for Vets is a safe place to go any time a veteran needs a break from the daily stresses of life. All vets and members of their family are welcome. Here we don’t use words like “handicapped” or “challenged”. The farm is about vets helping vets, the farm feeding the hungry in our community, and in time experiencing the rewards of another kind of service.
If you or someone you know is a veteran, give us a try. This is a special place. We are grateful for your service and we’re here if you need us.
“If you don’t try, you don’t do.”
Great site, John. Loved the pictures of Uncle Mike and you, too! You did a good job on the page. I’m so proud of you.
What an excellent mission you have here! I wish nothing but success for your organization. Horticultural therapy has been proven as an effective method for treating mental disorders.
This is a wonderful place for our grandsons to volunteer community service. They love cutting wood, feeding the animals, planting, and mostly hanging out at the farm with the veterans. Keep up the great work.
Hi John,
I have something to show you for the rose garden. I cannot seem to find your number here. Thanks.
